At the few earlier episodes, I thought this drama was just another simple romantic drama. The conflict was indeed not really complicated, the director tried to make the prime minister’s life was as real as posible with all of his family and political problem, but he kept the tension not too high so we could enjoy the show without thinking too much. However, I realised that this drama’s main characters were kinda fascinating to be explored.There is a well known quote by Marcel Proust, the journey of for new invention isn’t looking for a new land, but new way to see something. If I was still a student, I would just enjoy Yoona face and admire her cute smile during the drama. But the current me is quite mature to understand deeper about the struggle of the characters of this drama. Actually, just like the drama, the characters were also not too complex, but I have ‘new eyes’ to see little bit deeper to their heart.
Kwon Yul (Prime Minister)
Extreme strick and absolute justice. He is an idealist man who’s talking assertively, directly to the point, and for him ,everything must be placed in right place, there is no space for misarragement. He build his career from the buttom as presecutor and then he was elected as governor, currently he is the prime minister of Republic Korea. He is an excelent civil servant , an example leader for the younger generation but have no idea how to take care his own family. And if we talk about family, it mean we also talk about love, and this is how the drama was began.
He married the woman that he loved and have 3 kids but he never spent enough quality time with them. He’s always busy with his carrier, all of his focus is just serving his country. He’s a great patriot but bad husband and terrible father. He loves his wife, he never has eyes for other woman eventhough his wife has been ‘dead’ for years. But it wasn’t enough to make her happy. The worst part is he seem not aware with his wife situation because he almost never stayed by her side.
As a father, he definetely loves his children, but due to lack number of encounter, they don’t understant each other. He never attended his children important events. All he knows that he teach them Kendo and they shall exercise seriously. He always applies strick rules and they should follow it. It’s a difficult situation for both side but if you are parent and watch this drama, I am sure that you’ll worry about the children future, living a live with less affection like that.
They are young and their live is depend to Kwon Yul right now. But it’s just matter of time, when they grow up and have enough capability to live their own live, they would never pay attention to Kwon Yul words anymore, just like Kwon Yul never really pay attention to them. It’s common problem in modern parentship. The parents ussually wonder why their children don’t listen to them without realizing that the children have learned it from them. Who would care about words from people who never listen and try understant you, even they are your own parent. But, it won’t be a drama if it just end up like any other commoners life. The second character that I will discuss in the next paragraph has brought significant changing to Kwon Yul and his family’s life.
Nam Da Jong
She is a journalist from a entertainment magazine, Scandal News. Scandal News is third class magazine which actually has nothing to do with politicians’s life. But, when Kwon Yul became prime minister, it’s chief editor assigned Da Jong to interview him and discover his personal life. It was actually a weird job for her, kinda tough, because it was her first time covering politician’s life. But with her tenacity, she could approach Kwon Yul, even got an exclusive interview. But it wasn’t all, she ended up becoming Kwon Yul’s wife in a contract married due to some stupid pictures of them.
She moved to Kwon Yul’s house and met with his children. Athough she lived alone with her father, and her father has been sick for years, but he grown her up with abundant love. So, altough she had a tough life but she never felt lonely or helpless. She was sparkly person who could cheer up others even in gloomiest day. So the day when Kwon Yul’s children finnaly met her in their home as their motther, was just the begining of a revolution in their life. Everything would be different since that day.
She took care of Kwon Yul’s children just like her own children, She’s a woman after all, so her instict as a mother lead her to become close to them. First time was always hardest, Kwon Yul’s children rejected her at the beginning, but slow but sure she naturally became closer to them. She understood them, each of them, better that Kwon Yul ever did. She gave them love that they never got.
But unfortunately, in other hand, she didn’t gel along well with prime minister himself. Their fight actually just like the fight between new married couple but with Kwon Yul’s personality and pride, sometime he hurted Da Jong and made her cried. In this kind of situation, Da Jong used to come to someone who always comforted her in her bad days. She called him as her guardian angle and I will explore his character in the next paragraph.
Kang In Ho
Da jong’s guardian angle, in my opinion is the most complicated character in this drama. He had another purpose when he aplied the job as Kwon Yul’s chief’s assitant. I’ve just watched 10 episodes from 15 episodes that have been aired so far, so I don’t know what will he finnaly do to Kwon Yul. He lost his parent when he was a kid and his big brother grown him up. He ‘s only family that he has and he’s in vegetative state due to terrible car accident. His brother had affair with Kwon Yul’s wife and his car crused when he tried to take her away. In normal plot, he should be an evil character who wanted a revenge for his brother, infiltrating to Kwon Yul’s side in order to destroyed him from inside. But so far he’s a good man, albiet little bit mysterious.
Maybe, it’s indeed difficult to hate Kwon Yul. He’s not a good father but he’s a great public figure. He always strongly do what is right and never tried to lie before Da Jong’s incident. Kang In Ho is smart man, I believe he actually know that Kwon Yul can’t be blamed for his brother condition. It was his brother who was in wrong side. But his brother is the only family that he has, and he loves him very much. So, maybe half of his heart still can’t accept his brother’s fate and looking for someone to be blamed. And his situation made him become confusing character in this drama.
I often confuse with his expression. After having an argument or discussion with Kwon Yul and chief Seo, he had unpredictable emotion. I wondered whether he was pissed of, contemplating or planning something bad. And to make everything become even more difficult, he fell in love to Da Jong, whose current status was prime minister’s wife. Now his ‘conflict’ with Kwon Yul is not just about his brother, but also about the woman he loves who unfortunately loves Kwon Yul.
But unlike Kang In Ho, who has double faces toward Kwon Yul, there is another character who has always been faithfull staying by his side even since his college time. If chief Kang is Da Jong’s guardian angle, then she was known as Kwon Yul’s bodyguard when they both were student. I’d like to discuss about her in the next paragraph.
Seo Hye Joo
She’s another Kwon Yul’s right hand men. I started watching this drama due to Yoona, but I end up liking this character. She’s physically in good shape. She’s beautifull, tall and slender. She’s also smart and reliable. Unlike other womans, she always think straight, she knows when she has to use her brain instead of her heart. Everything that you need from a partner, you can find on her. And Kwon Yul is lucky bastard who has won her heart even since she was a teen. Bad for her, this stupid ignorant prime minister never noticed her feeling toward him although she has been faithfully staying by his side for years.
Just like chief Kang brother’s case, you can’t just blame Kwon Yul for his ignorance because she never confesed her feeling properly and Kwon Yul loved another woman. I can’t imagine what was she feeling when Kwon Yul proposed and then married his wife. How could she keep staying by his side and even rejected another man proposal. I wonder, how big is her love?
I used to think that her life is pittiful until I realised that the life of a man that she rejected is even more pittiful. He’s Kwon Yul rival in politic, a Minister of finace, who’s also Kwon Yul’s brother in law. Let’s get going to the next paragraph to see what I think about him
Park Joon Ki
Minister Park is the only character in this drama who has valid reasons to hate Kwon Yul. First, Kwon Yul is his rival, and now he has better position than him. Second, Kwon Yul married his sister but never made her happy. Kwon Yul also has no capability to take care his nephews and niece. The third, is the hurtest. He has loved Seo Hye Joo since he was in college but she rejected him and keep staying at Kwon Yul’s side as his assistant. I believe that he still loves her because he never had happy married with his wife.
His wife, a heiress of a powerfull conglomerate, was indeed rational option for him after got rejected. But he never genuinly loved her. His wife is another antagonist character but I always feel sory for her. Her childish action is just resembling her heart which desperetly desire love from her husband. Her dad make everything become even worse for her. He don’t get along with his son in law because he thinks that he’s just his guard dog who protect his waelthy using his position in politic. Marrying someone rich is indeed not always the best choice.
I am pretty sure that everyone has noticed that this story put Kwon Yul as the centre. Just like the picture above, you can see that Kwon Yul stand in the middle and people who love whom stand by order, both from right and left. Yeah, Kang In Ho stand in the left, loves Nam Da Jong, who stands beside him, but she loves Kwon Yul. You can find the same pattern from another side. But, let’s put all this dramas aside for a minute. Kwon Yul’s character is indeed typical character who can makes people gather around him. He’s idealist and independent. He always focus and dicipline in his job and he achieve what he deserves. I’ve learned lesson from his character. Many people try to attract other’s attention by doing stupid things but he doing what’s right and consistent with it. He admit that he worry about obstacles that have been waiting ahead him, but he keep moving forward. He’s someone that you can trust to lead you, such a great figure.
But, in other hand, I’ve also learned about his minus side, his family. Loads of drama show us the struggle before marriage, but the bigger problem come after it. His wife was cheating on him while his kids was growing up without enough love from their parent. Marriage life is indeed difficult, you have to really sure about everything before you decide to marry someone. This drama is a good example for people who have been mature enough but not married yet.
